Matthew Ryan Shim

Managing Director & CEO

Matthew is an investment professional cum entrepreneur. He is the founder, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SC Asia Capital, responsible for driving the firm towards achieving its vision of being the #1 alternative asset manager in Malaysia and overseeing all firm operations. He is also Chairman of the Executive Committee and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee of SC Asia Capital. Matthew graduated from St Pauls College, The University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Economics, majoring in Financial Economics and Finance, with minors in Accounting. He began his professional investing career as a Consultant Analyst at AIMS Asset Management – Panah Fund, an Asian focused equity long/short with macro-overlay hedge-fund. He then left to establish his own independent consulting practice, working specifically on bespoke private equity opportunities, one of which was for the takeover of a ASX listed company. Following deal completion, Matthew rejoined the professional investment industry. First as an Analyst working directly under Tong Kooi Ong within The Edge Malaysia & Singapore and then as an Equity Investment Associate at Maybank Investment Banking Group Singapore. Finally, he left Maybank to join a single-family office in Singapore to help setup, manage and institutionalise its investment and business operations. In September 2022, Matthew came out on his own to lead a deal, with a few private investors, to take over and build a beauty and cosmetics business, which he eventually sold in 2023. Since the exit, Matthew founded SC Asia Capital with the ambition of building Malaysia’s #1 home-grown alternative investment management company.

Matthew Ryan Shim

Matthew Ryan Shim is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SZL Capital, as well as Chairman of the Executive Committee and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee. Lian Wah Seng

Lian Wah Seng is Non-Executive Chairman of Redplanet Bhd, since his board appointment in 2019. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Computer Information Systems from the University of New South Wales in 1994. He was admitted as a Chartered Accountant with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants in 2001 and has over 20 years working experience in IT, finance and consultancy. He began his career in 1994 as an Audit Assistant for Arthur Andersen & Co, Kuala Lumpur (currently Ernst & Young). During his tenure, he was involved in performing technology risk assessments, technology management and financial audit engagements ranging from special projects, involving merger and acquisition exercises to  securities business process improvement. In 1996, he left Arthur Andersen & Co and joined OSK Securities (OSK) as a Research Analyst. He left OSK in 1997 and joined the OCBC research team responsible for the Utilities and Technology sectors. In 2002, he left OCBC and joined DDSB (M) Sdn Bhd (DDSB) as the Chief Operating Officer, where he oversaw sales, project delivery and operational functions of the company. He left DDSB in 2015 and was thereafter appointed as Director of GoBike, a passenger and delivery services business with operations in Thailand. He was responsible for ensuring that the board is effective in its task of setting up and implementing the company’s direction and strategy. Since 2017, he has been Chief Executive Officer of AZTI Technology Sdn Bhd, responsible for creating, planning, implementing and integrating the strategic direction of the company.

Amir Zharif Bin Abdullah

Zharif is currently the Managing Partner and Head of the Corporate Commercial Practice Group of Zharif Nizamuddin. His practice focuses on the areas of mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, capital markets & securities, private equity & venture capital and compliance. Zharif has had experience leading complex deals, navigating matrix structures, working with different cultures, advising clients across different legal systems and managing individual performers. He held a wide range of roles and gained crucial industry experience as part of his involvement in: (a) cross-border deals as a transactions lawyer in an international law firm; (b) (i) Shell’s downstream business in Malaysia and (ii) its third-party services business in Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific, as the company’s in-house counsel; and (c) the legal and operational matters of the Enervive Group of Companies, a private investment holding company involved in real estate, renewables (solar), water treatment technologies and sports (facilities, apparels and consultancy), as the group’s Chief Operating Officer. Zharif was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor in the High Court of Malaya in 2010. He holds a Bachelor of Legal Studies (Hons) and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from Universiti Teknologi MARA, where he was recognised as the best graduate for both degrees. He served as an Executive Committee Member of the Malaysian Corporate Counsel Association for the 2014/2015 term and as an Industry Lecturer for the “Corporate Law and Practice” course at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia between 2018-2020.

Aaron Lau

Aaron is part of the founding analyst class at SZL Capital, having previously been a junior associate at a RM200m (US$45m) Venture Debt fund. In his previous role, Aaron managed the execution of several transactions across various sectors, which include healthcare, technology, logistics, commodities and electric vehicles. Originally from Penang, Aaron possesses deep networks within the local and start-up community. At SZL, he is primarily responsible for origination and sourcing of deal flow, deal structuring, due-diligence and execution of investments. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance from the University of Bristol.

Kar Chua

Kar Chua is part of the founding analyst class at SZL Capital. Before joining SZL, Kar Chua worked in Sydney as a Mortgage Specialist for Australia’s leading mortgage broker. In his current role, Kar Chua designs and maintains SZL’s proprietary quantitative toolkit in constant pursuit of optimising the firms’ decision-making process. He combines statistical modeling (e.g.Bayesian modeling) and programming techniques (e.g. R, SQL, Julia), with traditional financial analysis/modeling. Kar Chua graduated with First Class Honours in Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) from Monash University. He completed his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1 and Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking.

Shim Choon Ming

Shim Choon Ming currently holds a dealer’s representative license with CGSI Securities and has been in the stock broking, advisory and related investment banking industry for over 30 years. He graduated  from the University of Buckingham, England, having completed his Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree.  He started as an investment analyst in 1992. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Shim had assumed various key management positions such as Senior Vice-President, Sales & Dealing with Jupiter Securities Sdn Bhd. ; Head of Retail & Online with OSK Investment Bank; Head of Ipoh Branch, Maybank Investment Bank; and Chief Operating Officer with N2N Arabia, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a subsidiary of N2N Connect Berhad (an investment banking solutions provider).
